In just a few days, we have heard from many people who have shared stories, memories, words of support, heartbreak, and frustration surrounding the City Council’s decision to terminate Teton Rock Gym’s lease at the Driggs Recreation Center.

Over nearly 12 years, this space has been built piece by piece with the help of volunteers, program families, staff, coaches, setters, community partners, and members who believed that Teton Valley deserved recreation spaces where people could challenge themselves, connect with others, and grow. Many meaningful relationships have formed here over the years. From deep friendships and mentorships to marriages, TRG has fostered life-changing connections that extend beyond its physical walls. Because of what this space has meant to so many people, we take the responsibility of preserving it extremely seriously.

We want the community to understand that this outcome did not come from a lack of effort to find a workable path forward. Over many months, we worked extensively with the Mayor and City staff on DRC policies, access policies, and lease terms. There were multiple rounds of revisions, negotiations, and compromise from all sides. By the time of the Council meeting, we understood the proposed policies and lease terms to be mutually agreeable, which is why we believed the lease had been calendared as part of the renewal process.

Part of what makes this so difficult is that recreation infrastructure like this is not easily or quickly replaced. Climbing gyms are highly specialized facilities with significant operational, safety, staffing, and programming systems behind them. In today’s environment, spaces like this are incredibly difficult to fund, build, and sustain, especially in small communities. Once continuity is disrupted, rebuilding it can take years.

We support broader recreation opportunities in Teton Valley, and we have participated in ongoing conversations about the future of recreation infrastructure in our community. We do not believe that losing existing recreation infrastructure before replacement infrastructure exists benefits the community. Therefore, our focus is on doing everything we can to preserve continuity for the families, youth programs, staff, and broader community that rely on the gym.

We encourage people to share their stories and experiences, and to keep this conversation constructive and community-centered. Community voices matter, and it is important for people to understand what this place has meant to so many over the years.

We have opened the gym for free community climbing through Saturday. If you want to come climb, ask questions, share stories, or simply spend time in the space, we would love to see you.

Thank you for the overwhelming support, kindness, and encouragement during an incredibly difficult moment for our organization and community.

A Message to Our Community

In just a few days, we have heard from many people who have shared stories, memories, support, heartbreak, and frustrations surrounding the City Council’s decision to terminate Teton Rock Gym’s lease at the Driggs Recreation Center.

Over nearly 12 years, this space has been built piece by piece by volunteers, families, staff, coaches, setters, partners, and community members who believed Teton Valley deserved recreation spaces where people could challenge themselves, connect with others, and grow. Friendships have formed here, some resulting in marriage. Camps, teams, programs, competitions, movie nights, and partnerships have been built here. Many people have poured years of work into making this place what it is today.

In today’s environment, spaces like this are incredibly difficult to build, sustain, and capitalize, especially in small communities. Once continuity is disrupted, rebuilding it can take years.

We support broader recreation opportunities in Teton Valley, and we have participated in ongoing conversations about the future of recreation infrastructure in our community. But we do not believe that losing existing recreation infrastructure before replacement infrastructure exists benefits the community.

For many of us, this place has also been deeply personal. Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching kids grow into capable young adults, and in many ways, this community shaped us too.

Right now, our focus is on doing everything we can to preserve continuity for the families, youth programs, staff, and broader community that rely on the gym.

We encourage people to continue sharing their stories and experiences, and to keep this conversation constructive and community-centered. Community voices matter, and it is important for people to understand what this place has meant to so many over the years.

We have opened the gym for free community climbing through Saturday, and Jen and Jacob will both be around the gym throughout the next several days. If you want to come climb, ask questions, share stories, or simply spend time in the space, we would love to see you.

Thank you for the overwhelming support, kindness, and encouragement during an incredibly difficult moment for our organization and community.
